Quite often I will get a head in that has been skinned by a very well meaning stalker, keeper or customer but it has not been skinned correctly thereby reducing the quality when mounting the item.
The incision needs to be one straight line from between the shoulder blades to between the ears, then to form a T or Y shaped cut to the antler butts.
As for the circular incision around the base of the deer's head/shoulders, cut around the front elbows and then around the chest behind the shoulder joining the incisions up.
In most cases you can, having skinned up to the neck, detach the head without having to skin the head and then freeze or bring to me within two days.
You should take 100mm / 10cm / 4 inches more skin than you would think necessary as we can always throw some away but it is almost impossible to put it back.
I will be putting some photos in to help soon
